New rhododendron 'Frank Fujioka'

'Frank Fujioka' rhododendron

The rhododendron 'Frank Fujioka' is a cultivar resulting from a cross between 'Spun Gold' and 'Very Berry', created by M. Colombel in 2014 and registered in 2023. This shrub forms a compact and spreading habit of approximately 0.9 m in height by 1.3 m in width after nine years. It is distinguished by a generous bloom in mid-May (in northern France), bringing together 12 to 19 flowers in spherical trusses. The flowers, bell-shaped (60-65 by 85-95 mm), possess five lobes with very wavy edges. Their yellowish pink buds open to a moderate yellowish pink tone, delicately adorned with twin flares of bright red spots that widen toward the dorsal lobe. The exterior of the corolla displays a deeper pink, while the pronounced calice measures from 12 to 30 millimeters. Regarding the foliage, its elliptic leaves measure between 95 and 145 mm long by 42 to 63 mm wide, featuring a rounded base, a broadly acute apex, a flat margin, and a matte finish on the upper surface. Finally, its hardiness allows it to tolerate temperatures dropping down to -20 degrees Celsius.
